This paper is devoted to the study of the history of wooden utensils from the Bronze Age burials from the territory of the Northern Black Sea (Yamna, Catacomb, Babinska, Zrubna cultures). The purpose of the article – to identify existing and future directions in the study of wooden utensils. Scientific interest on the problem of wooden utensils rose in the 80s of the twentieth century. By now, researchers have identified the main directions of studing and analyzed burials with wooden utensils, laid the foundations for the creation of the classification of wooden utensils of the Bronze Age, reached the abstraction level and pointed possible cult status of wooden bowls. The issues reported in the scientific literature refers typology of wooden utensils; study of technology; metal elements; the origins of the tradition of use in the funeral rites; issues of chronology; reconstruction of the social and spiritual life. The author concludes that today all this problems remains relevant. One of the priorities is the development of a unified classification of wooden utensils for all archaeological cultures of the Bronze Age and the introduction of a common terminology to avoid confusion during the publication of new materials, as well as a comparative analysis of the presence of specific types of wooden utensils in the burial of the Bronze Age. Addressing these issues will expand our understanding of the process which took place in the steppe during the Bronze Age.
