Abstract

The article considers transformation of the Egyptian foreign policy towards the Crusader States in the first years after mamluks’ coming to power. Due to different reasons the previous academic papers considered this policy to sufficient extent only after the beginning of the reign of al-Zahir Baybars. The aim of the article is to identify the reasons and nature of this transformation. The object of the research is the foreign policy of the first mamluks before al-Zahir Baybars’s reign. Mongol invasion, the previous attempt of Louis IX to attack Cairo, as well as the conflict between Genoa and Venice resulted in mamluks’ decision to eliminate completely the Crusader States in the Middle East.
