Re-education of Germans after World War II: issue analysis in Anglo-American historio­graphy

Abstract

The role and place of the issue of re-education of Germans after World War II in Anglo-American historiography are determined. The prerequisites for the emergence of research interest in the issue of re-education of Germans on the part of the Anglo-American scientific community are analysed. The main approaches of the authors to the study of the educational reform carried out by the victorious powers in occupied Germany are considered. The relationship between the problematic and studies of educational reforms in the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic and the united Germany is established. The reasons for the evolution of author’s assessments in the late 20th – early 21st century are revealed. It is concluded that the programme of re-education of Germans implemented by the victorious powers after World War II traditionally occupied an important place in historiography, its results were considered as the basis for the formation of a new type of Germany.
