Stages of new media development and regulation of cultural industries in the People’s Republic of China (2001–2018)

The article reveals the process of new media formation in China as a new sector of the media industry and an innovative element of the media system. It observes the main principles of state regulation of new media. The historical and typological analysis have been conducted to identify the main stages of the new media development over the past 20 years in China considering the evolution of digital and network technologies. The evolution of the state-operated approaches of new media regulation in cultural industries of the People’s Republic of China in general is studied. The article revealed the importance of innovative development of new media as an instrument of interaction between the ruling party, state and society, as well as it being the social communication medium of an efficient governing.
