Semantic-onomasiological peculiarity of the metalanguage lexical-phraseological field in the Russian and English languages
Keywords:
lexical-phraseological field, metalanguage nominative units, motivation, idiomaticity, onomasiological differences between lexemes and phrasemesAbstract
The paper considers motivation of nominative units and related to it idiomaticity, shows gradual nature of these properties. It proposes a classification of nominative units (lexemes and phrasemes) by the type of relationship between the signified and the signifier which distinguishes phonetical, component-based and associative motivation and partial and complete conventionality. It demonstrates the possibilities of applying the onomasiological classification by the example of the Russian and English metalanguage (connected with language and speech) lexical-phraseological fields. It determines the ratio of the transparent and opaque units in the fields (3,2‒3,3 : 1) and their lexical (1,6‒1,9 : 1) and phraseological (7,3‒10 : 1) parts and the relative frequency of the various forms of motivation. It notes that the lexemes mostly convey general cognitive meanings, the phrasemes ‒ particular emotive (predominantly) and particular cognitive meanings.
