The typology of the biblical components in the texts of Francysk Skaryna’s editions

Abstract

We investigate the presence of the biblical text in the texts of Skaryna’s editions. Based on the analysis of forewordafterwords complex, prayers and hymnography of the Belarusian firstprinter and accounting of previous studies of biblical citation we introduce the term «biblical component» which reflects a new approach to the problem of biblical citation and prevents from misusing the term «biblical quote». The typology of biblical components were made taking into consideration the influence of the books of Scripture on different levels of Francysk Skaryna’s texts. We have singled out the following components: the citation in its narrow meaning, a prayer element, preimage structure, biblical image, biblical plot, biblical рaraenesis, metatext element, marginalia and title of the book. The fragments of foreign language texts and the quotations from other authors are considered to be the individual biblical components. Although each of these parts can be a version of one of the components above, their main feature is borrowing from a different language or author. Also, in the of Francуsk Skaryna’s works an element of the poetics of the biblical text is determined.
