The influence of women’s self-image as a mother on child-mother interaction
Keywords:
motherhood, maternal self-awareness, self-perception, maternal qualities, child-mother interactionAbstract
The article examines the characteristics of women’s self-image of her maternal qualities and their possible impact on child-mother interaction. A relationship is established between women’s self-image of her maternal qualities and the characteristics of her interactions with their children. A woman’s self-image as a patient, balanced, and consistent mother influence all components of child-mother interaction (sensitive, emotional, and behavioural components). A woman’s self-image as a kind, loving, gentle, intelligent, and attentive mother are reflected in the emotional and behavioural components of child-mother interaction. A woman’s self-image of her negative maternal qualities predict difficulties in mother – child dyadic relationships. It is concluded that changing a woman’s self-image in the context of increasing positive self-perceptions of maternal qualities (especially volitional ones) creates the preconditions for optimising child-mother interaction.
