Safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage: conventional and practical aspects

This article examines the legislative and practical aspects of the intangible cultural heritage (ICH) safeguarding against the point of view of international and national approaches. The Belarusian experience in the implementation of the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the risks, and threats that accompany, and ways for minimising them are studied. Special attention is paid to the study of the process of identification and inventorying of ICH in Belarus and other countries. Its importance for heritage management is emphasised. The factor of participation of the bearers of ICH is considered, foremost, for the communities, groups, and individuals involved in it, for whom the cultural heritage is an indicator of their identity.
