Abstract

There is a close relationship between addictive behaviour towards technology and mental disorders. Internet gaming addiction is a new diagnosis included in the 11th edition of the International classification of diseases as a mental disorder leading to personal and social impairments. Compared to other types of Internet behaviour, excessive enthusiasm for video games can cause anxiety, depression, academic procrastination and lead to a deterioration in sleep quality. For the diagnosis of gaming disorder members of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) developed 9 criteria on the basis of which a questionnaire was created. This questionnaire has been translated into German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other languages, however, its translation into Russian language is absent. The aim of the present study is to adapt the gaming disorder questionnaire developed by APA members for the Russian-speaking community, as well as to shorten it and to demonstrate the validity and reliability of the short version of the questionnaire. The basis of the work consists of the results of an online survey of 703 respondents (M = 19.9; SD = 5.2), including 370 women (52 %) and 333 men (48 %). The study utilises the gaming disorder questionnaire (APA), the short version of the smartphone addiction questionnaire (V. P. Sheinov), the short version of the procrastination questionnaire (V. P. Sheinov, A. S. Dziavitsyn), the social media addiction questionnaire (V. P. Sheinov, A. S. Dziavitsyn) and the hospital anxiety and depression scale. The short version of the adapted gaming disorder questionnaire will allow for comparison of the results obtained from Russian-speaking respondents with those identified from non-Russian-speaking respondents.
