Family as a factor influencing adolescent health: analitical review of studies

Abstract

Based on the analysis of publications placed in the public domain in the databases «Russian Science Citation Index» and «Springer», as well as on the portal of the World Health Organisation, etc., the protective and potentially dangerous factors affecting adolescent health are identified. It is noted that the economic status of the family and the degree of education of parents play an important role in this process. At the same time, the economic status of the family affects the child’s health not directly, but indirectly, determining the habits of family members. It is indicated that even a low economic status of the family may not matter much if there is psychological and emotional contact between parents and children, health-saving habits are widespread in the family, parents are involved in children’s life and are informed about their physical and mental state, and children are informed about information necessary for health preservation (for example, reproductive health aspects) in a modern way. The interrelation between the lifestyle of parents and children and the influence of the psychological state of the former on the well-being of the latter has been established. The impact on parent-child relations and children’s health of a new factor – techno-fertility, which appeared due to changes in behavioural stereotypes caused by globalisation and informatisation of the external environment, has been recorded. It is recognised that the mother figure plays a major role in the formation of the culture of nutrition and leisure of adolescents, controls the timely passage of necessary medical examinations. In this context, the degree of education of the mother, who acts as a conductor of cultural norms, is of particular importance. The mother’s lifestyle and her emotional contact with the child are important risk factors for the adolescent’s initiation to alcohol and smoking, and for the development of aggression, which manifests itself in a tendency to cyberbullying. The absence of the father in the household combined with the mother’s inordinate use of alcohol poses a risk of the emergence of this habit in an adolescent child. It is emphasised that Belarus pays great attention to national security. The implementation of measures to ensure it contributes to the normal functioning of the family institution in the country, which is essential for the health of children.
