Abstract

Based on the research of the Generations and Gender program, an assessment is made of the level of sustainability of marriage and its significance for the regime of reproduction of the population in Belarus. It is concluded that Belarus is characterized by very traditional patterns of matrimonial behavior. So, of the 25 most fertile years, the average Belarusian woman spends 14.8 years in marriage (for example, in Norway – 9.9 years). At the same time, due to the termination of marriage, losses are only 2.8 years. Also for Belarus marriage is practically the non-alternative form of family relations, in which the birth of two or more children is allowed. According to a specially developed method, an assessment is made of the influence of different categories of marital status on fertility. It is found that divorces reduce the total fertility rate by only 0.07 children per woman. Thus, the effect of divorce on fertility is not very significant. The main contribution to the decline of the birth rate (0.16 children per woman) is due to the fact that a certain proportion of women (13.7 %) do not marry until the end of the reproductive period.
