The paper considers the actual issues of application of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, which have aroused increased interest among the academic community. On the basis of empirical data obtained through a survey of 3rd and 4th year students of Belarusian State University, lecturers of the faculty of philosophy and social sciences of BSU, as well as in-depth interviews with teachers and students, the practices of using AI in educational activities are analysed. The obtained data show that students actively use neural networks to search for information, perform tasks, generate ideas, translate information into a foreign language, and check their own knowledge, but they remain sceptical about the results of AI activity: the average confidence score is 5.51 points on a 10-point scale. It is stated that the absolute majority of lecturers notice the use of generative AI technologies in students’ works. The lecturers themselves make little use of AI tools. It is emphasized that the obvious advantages of AI application are accompanied by problems and risks that can significantly worsen the quality of training of specialists with higher education. The experience of regulating the use of artificial intelligence in universities of different countries is considered. It is noted that it is necessary to prepare relevant documents defining the norms and rules for the use of AI systems in the system of higher education.
