Abstract

The The present paper considers the influence of the ancient texts of the Pentateuch of Moses at the understanding of אתניות (εθνος, gens/nation)as a specific community by Old Czech and Russian (Old Belarusian) speaking peoples of the Eastern Europe. It touches few main aspects of the case: the degree of understanding of אתניות (εθνος, gens/nation)as a community, the acceptance (installation) of the criteria of that community selection and the influence of the Czech Bible of 1506 at the translation of the regarded texts by F. Skaryna. The main sources of the research were the original texts of Torah, Septuagint, Jerome’s Vulgate, Czech Bible of 1506 and Bible of F. Skaryna. The paper concludes that concerning the translation of the Pentateuch of Moses: not the Czech Bible of 1506 nor the Bible of Skaryna were the literal translation of the reviewed texts of Jerome’s Vulgate, the Czech Bible of 1506 influenced the revised texts of F. Skaryna considerably, the Skaryna’s translation of the Pentateuch has not been the literal translation of the Czech Bible of 1506 (except for some passages). Regarding the אתניות (εθνος, gens/nation) issue, the Skaryna’s translation does not kept strong the Hebrew criteria of the revised community, sometimes (perhaps after the Czech Bible of 1506) considered it just as any group of people, however mostly accepted some additional identity to it, including the language as an ultimate feature, which has nothing to do with any ancient criteria nor with the Czech Bible of 1506.
