Evolution of Evdokim Romanov’s ideological and aesthetic views on the development of Belarusian literature in the late 19th century

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the worldview, activity and that part of the creative heritage of Evdokim Romanov (1855–1922), which is still not widely studied in Belarusian literary criticism. As a publicist, writer, critic, textologist and publisher of texts in Belarusian language, mostly anonymous, the scientist proved to be an active participant of the literary process in Belarus in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His literary adaptations with the use the montage of folk legends «Punishment in a hundred years. Belarusian legend» (1894), «Merciful Osip, or I want mercy, not sacrifice. Bylit» (1896) contributed to the genre enrichment of national literature and demonstrated E. Romanov’s intentions to use maximally the treasures of Belarusian folk art to enrich national literature, it’s traditions were only laid down in that period. As an ardent supporter of the ideology of Western Russianism, E. Romanov was the author of the pamphlet «Cry of the Belarusian land» (1894), which provoked a negative reaction in society. The scientist was one of the most energetic researchers and popularisers of the poem «Taras on Parnassus». His attitude as a reviewer to the work of F. Bogushevich was ambiguous. The evolution of E. Romanov’s ideological and aesthetic views on the original works in the Belarusian language was influenced by various factors: private, cultural, ideological, religious and others. In the early 1890s the scientist was wary to artificial Belarusian works. In the early 20th century he compiled and published an anthology of Belarusian works, which became the impetus for the development of national writing.
