Structural-semantic features of modifications of the Chinese characters

Abstract

The changes in the graphics of Chinese hieroglyphs which are connected with the reform of writing, carried out in the middle of the 20th century due to the problems of understanding and using Chinese hieroglyphics, are considered. As a result of the etymological and component analysis, the structural and semantic features of the modification of traditional characters are determined. It is revealed that the process of transformation is most characteristic of those signs of animate or inanimate nature which can act as concretisers of concepts through the indication of a prototypical representation of an animal, artefact, etc. It was found that the components that most accurately represent certain categories of objects, such as architectural details, were subjected to the least modification. It is noted that the reform of writing has led to the aggravation of the problem of homonymy in Chinese language. It is concluded that Chinese linguists were cautious in transforming the semantic components of characters which allowed them to simplify irrelevant parts of signs that had lost their differentiating function in comparison with other similar graphemes and to preserve a high degree of motivation of Chinese writing units.
