Abstract

Changes in semantics of a loanword in the recipient language are considered as a crucial factor in its adaptation. We have fixed over 200 polysemantic borrowings from the English language, according to dictionaries of the Belarusian language and new English loanwords used in articles of the Belarusian press. We compare meanings of the words in both the languages from the point of view of narrowing, widening or saving semantics of the donor language. We also come to the conclusion, that polysemanticism is characteristic for the loanwords which have been functioning in the language for over 30 years.
