Francysk Skaryna’s prayer verse

The article is devoted to the investigation of the essence of the prayer verse (kontakion), its artistic features and rhythmical components. The terms «stich» (stichos – Greek) and «stich versification» are introduced into Belarusian prosody terminology. The subject of study is the character of the prayer verse in Francysk Skaryna’s (ca. 1490 – ca. 1551) creative work, the contribution of Belarusian first printer and the Bible translator into the development of Belarusian and the whole Eastern Slavonic poetry, into the formation of particular verse genres, kinds and strophe forms (litany, acrostich, tercet, distich and others).
