Personality of the translator and the destiny of the translation: social factors in translation analyses
Abstract
In the pre-Anschluss Austria, Zsolnay Publishing House was one of the most successful while collaborating with Jewish translators and publishing books by Schalom Asch. This article analyses one of the reasons of an unexpected success of the publisher with agricultural background – well organised translators’ and authors’ networks. The role of the translator at every level of translation production is being considered in this text, as well as translator’s influence on the development of the publishing house at the very beginning and on its reputation in a long-term perspective. Within translation sociology and translation history the question of translators’ visibility in text and society is being addressed – one of the most discussed topics in the West-European translation studies of the last two decades.
