History and modernity of the red house of the Belarusian State University
Abstract
The history of the construction of the University campus of the Belarusian State University, which since 1921 was formed on the territory between the modern Railway Station Square and Independence Square, is considered. Based on new sources, the transformation of this building during 1924–1996 is traced as a scientific and educational environment of the first Belarusian university. Future physicists, mathematicians and doctors were trained and the physical science of Belarus took its first steps here. After a radical reconstruction, this building, known as the red house of the Belarusian State University, today houses the administration (rector’s office and some departments) of the university. The article describes the decoration of lobbies and offices, which in the second half of the 1990s – early 2000s was made by outstanding Belarusian artists and sculptors. In fact, a small excursion route has been formed along two floors of the university building.
