Spengler renaissance and the concept of global history
Abstract
German philosopher O. Spengler remains an ambiguous figure in the academic community. There is still great divergence in the perception of his work, including his concept of the «morphology of world history». The article presents a reconstruction of the concept taking into account its main meaning and implications, unusual style and substantial variations in its assessment. It is claimed that a Spengler renaissance is currently taking place. Of particular interest is the revival of the German philosopher’s thoughts in a new interdisciplinary field of sociohistorical and global studies – global history. The article attempts to properly present the concept of «global history» noting its methodological and conceptual features as well as its methodological correlation with O. Spengler’s «morphology of world history». It is asserted that the German philosopher’s concept is actualised within the framework of global history, which indicates that it may have potential in this new field of study.
