Open Marxism and revival of sociology: the role of Julian Hoсhfеld and Zygmunt Bauman
Abstract
The article is dedicated to the post-war period of the development of Polish sociology, the renaissance of which falls on the mid-1950s and in this sense it is for a decade ahead of the Soviet experience of the sociological knowledge revival. The focus is on the key ideas of the conception of open Marxism of Julian Hoсhfeld who entered the annals of the history of sociology by his attempt to move away from orthodox Marxism and development of the principles of a democratic and humane version of socialism. In parallel, the ideas of the renewed Marxism of Zygmunt Bauman, the first author of a full course of lectures on the theory of sociology that promoted the adoption of university sociology in post-war Poland, and formation of Sociology of Politics as a discipline, are subjected to thorough analysis. The retrospective analysis of the history of Polish sociology presented in the article expands the horizons of understanding the methodological origins of the formation of the Polish sociological school.
