The problem of glassware typology in Modern times (based on archaeological research in the territory of North and Central Belarus)
Abstract
The article deals with the problem of glassware typology in XVI–XIX centuries based on the materials which were found during the archaeological excavations in the territory of North and Central Belarus. Functional purpose of artifacts and their evolution in time are offered as a main principle of the typology. Forms and types of products are segregated on the basis of their morphology and technology of production. Glass color and decoration depends on, first of all, regional specific features and aesthetic requirements of customers. In description of glass products needs to use standardized terminology. A big problem in the analysis of the artifacts is their safety (fragmentation and iridescence susceptibility). The range of postmedieval glassware from the territory of North and Central Belarus is represented by four basic categories: container and tableware (for storage, transport and delivery of liquids), pharmacy and laboratory flasks (for manufacture and storage of chemicals), household products (for domestic use), interior glass (for decoration). The main type of glassware and their chronology are defined in the article.
